Nominated for Best Small Fictions. The things in our house we haven’t gotten rid of threaten to overtake us. They collect dust and bear the possibility of silverfish and brown spiders with violin backs and gauzy white egg sacks. We dig them out of garage bins, attic storage, and bedroom closets. Nearly all of it is baby toys or decor from our dismantled nursery. Our son is seven: too old to still be interested but too young to let go willingly.

Horror Story
This is the first mixed media piece in a series I created using acrylic paint and torn pages from a Patricia Cornwell novel on a canvas panel. If you're familiar with Cornwell's Scarpetta novels, you know they are grusome and dark. Kay Scarpetta is a medical examiner who solves crimes and is often put into grave danger herself. Daydream
Somewhere we are camping alongside water: a river, stream, ocean or rare desert oasis. We hold hands. Our son is talking to the water, bowing with a mantis in prayer, a tiny octopus colors itself to his eyes. How did we ever define home, a place we make is nothing compared to the redwood tree we rest our bodies against. We are so small and soft.
